Śarad Navrātri: Day 9 – Mā Siddhidātri


On day 9, Mā Durgā is worshipped in her most divine form Mā Siddhidātri. Siddhidātri is made up of – Siddhi, which means ‘perfection’ and Datri means ‘on who provides or bestows. Siddhidātri, one who grants perfection in every activity that Her devotees undertake.

Planet Ketu is ruled by Devi Siddhidātri. She is the Supreme power who rules the minds of Her devotees and offers motivation to lead a disciplined life that is spiritually elevated. Worshipping Her with complete devotion is said to appease her who in turn blesses the Sādhaka with great Siddhis. 

Devi Siddhidātri possesses eight siddhis or spiritual powers:

  1. Animā (अणिमा)the power to reduce to the size of an atom – Bhagwān Hanumān had reduced himself to a minuscule version to search for Sītā without anyone’s knowledge in the island of Lankā.
  2. Mahimā (महिमा) the power to become enormous in size – Bhagwān Hanumān had become a gigantic version of himself to burn down the island of Lankā. Bhagwān Viṣṇu also assumed a huge form in his Vāmana avatār. With three steps, he was able to cover the three worlds.
  3. Garimā (गरिमा) the power to become very heavy in weight
  4. Laghimā (लघिमा) the power to become very light in weight
  5. Prāpti(प्राप्ति) the power to acquire anything at will at any time
  6. Prākambya (प्राकाम्य) the power to do anything you desire from flying to walking on water
  7. Iśatva(इशित्व) power over all the elements of creation
  8. 8. Vaśitva (वशित्व) – power to control all the natural forces, and power over life and death
